Counselling Method

Transcend applies to each session a person-centred humanistic approach to counselling.

This style of counselling promotes a non directive way of helping people. It does not render a diagnosis, offer an interpretation, attempt persuasion, make suggestion nor give advice. Instead it promotes and encourages the belief that all humans have the potential to self actualise and resolve their own problems once they understand them. It emphasises understanding and caring by the counsellor, believing that in the right therapeutic conditions a client has the resources to take responsibility for their own reality and reach their own conclusions. It provides clients with tools to help take charge of their situation, to act as a guide towards self awareness.

Person centred therapy regards the client/counsellor relationship as significant in influencing the quality of therapy. It is emphasised that the counsellor must be genuine, accepting, open and honest and must also have a deep understanding of clients thoughts, ideas, experiences and feelings. The principles of person centred therapy focus on accurate empathic understanding, congruency and unconditional positive regard.

In relating this theory to that of grief and loss, most clients are trying to regain control of a new unwanted reality, they are often overwhelmed, sad and helpless. It is therefore important that the counsellor supports the client in learning to trust in himself and to use this trust to find new direction. In most grief situations the client is battling the balance between the ideal self and real self, the ideal being themselves before the loss. In applying person centred therapy this enables the client to reconcile between their real self and who they wish they were.
